Todd Barrow ~ Sharing Music One Note At A Time

Todd Barrow ~ Sharing Music One Note At A Time

Todd Barrow’s passion is music and he wants to share it one note at a time.  He enjoys writing, producing, recording and releasing music for airplay.

Barrow’s Music Background

Barrow began his music interest at a young age. The interest in music started with his mother encouraging and influencing him. The first instrument is learning the piano. His mother’s encouragement is important today. Encouragement leads him to love all aspects of music.

Born and raised in Texas the country music seems to be a natural. Barrow took an adventure around music genre before becoming a country music performer. He states, “I began in my younger years doing gospel then it was pop. I landed on country music because it paints the best picture I feel in music.” When listening to Barrow’s music you hear a blend of different genres with a center country music.

Barrow’s Influences

Favorite musicians, who are true writers and performers. Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, and Ronnie Milsap. These musicians have a level of commitment to their craft are not afraid to be the change in country music!

The opportunity to work under the collaboration with close friends of Charlie Pride results in Live The Dream with TMG label in 2014. Many performers influence his goals and music.

Charlie Pride, he states,  “is a great man. He has stuck to his roots and this inspired me to get involved with country music. Mutual close friend Sonny Burgess has been tremendous influencing my career as well. He is about giving back to charities with our talents.”

Barrow’s Charity Work

The value of being involved with community and giving back is a strong belief for Barrow. He works with Cook Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House (RMHFW) in Fort Worth.

These remarkable organization helps families in need while children are healing. RMHFW offers a supportive home for families dealing with seriously ill children. He collaborates to write and produce a song for RMHFW. The song, “The House That Love Built” helps raise awareness and funds for the organization.

Barrow’s Music

“Persistence is the keyword. I would also add an attitude of never giving up, he advises.” The music industry is many long hours on the road and sacrifices.

Combining genres often heard in his music. He decides what
combinations will work with the story he is telling, from a quote by Willie Nelson, “it best all you need is three chords and the truth now you have a country song.”

Keeping this schedule up is motivated by the thrill of entertaining an audience keeps him going. A strong commitment to the vision of great music in today’s society.

Barrow’s Songs

The approach to his music is storytelling. The song is not just words but a story. Portraying every line, the stories, and the people with a sincerity that comes from the heart is in the music.

A favorite song with 4Chion Lifestyle conveys being in the Bayou, Love in The Big Bayou,. Listening to the song you gain a visual of the Bayou and life. He says, “This was a great song for me to record. A visit to the Florida Keys and deep Louisiana sparked the interest to covey this story.”

The one song that the story just seems to connect to life not just for you but your listeners as well is he states, “I would say the one song is, Guadalupe River. A true story on a quick weekend trip to the crazy river in Texas. Everyone loves this tune!”

Dreamer and Believer ~ Sara Siders

Dreamer and Believer ~ Sara Siders

Sitting in the local Champaign coffee shop, Cafe Kopi, with Sara Siders a musician, composer, and guitarist. She is a boundary pusher not only in her music but life. Sider’s is a transplant to the Champaign, Illinois music scene. Her strong sense of rock, blues, and funk to her performance and music.

Sara Sider Mank and Sass Musician 4chion Lifestyle a

Sara Siders is the lead singer for Mank and Sass, she grew up around the music world. Her father, Bruce Hall, is the lead bass guitarist for Reo Speedwagon.  Siders states, “My father has lived his dream so you cannot tell me that dreams do not come true.” Seeing her father’s happiness she learned that you can make anything happen.

Enjoying her childhood, staying out of the limelight most of the time. Siders recalls, “going on stage with the ‘fambamfamily’ to sing “Roll With The Changes”  As a child, she enjoyed pushing the boundaries. She says, “The joke is sports or jail for me.”

She enjoyed playing softball. She earned a place on the practice team on the Olympic Women’s softball team at the age of 15 she states, “I could not even drive myself to practice.” She earned a scholarship to Purdue for softball. This was a great opportunity for her, but her junior year her dream to play softball ended because of 5 knee surgeries.

The day she found out she was no longer able to play sports. She locks herself in her room. She was not sure what she was going to do with her life at this point. “School was not my forte.”  Her roommate, Matt Zimmerman, threw her a guitar and told her to figure it out. That was the first time she had taken an interest in music. She did figure out the guitar and that she could sing.

Sara Siders discusses how she has huge stage fright. She began singing with her back to the audience. To this day she still has stage fright. She is still trying to get over stage fright. She has recently made a choice to stop drinking and that has intensified the fear. Her approach now is singing with her eyes closed. Sometimes friends will come up to the stage and stand there for minutes before she realizes someone is there. The smaller intimate performances are much more frightening for Siders than the larger arenas. She states, “she feels like the intimate settings are more personal and come with expectations of more talking.” The expectation that she should tell her story about each song and the inspiration behind the music.

She has taken the challenge of facing a change in her dreams to figuring out a new passion and facing her own fears of performance to make her new dream come true.  She feels that the uncomfortably is present in her performance. She remembers even as a young child being coaxed to the stage to sing with her family. Her performances include music she composes as well as covers like My Neck My Back.

Sara Siders is also a music composer. The ability to hear the song and play songs, she believes is genetically inclined to her family. Siders is like her father in that there was no formal structural music training. She is able to write the lyrics and the music without the ability to read music. This gives her the believer and dreamer aspect of the world. She as a child was guided to believe in yourself and what you’re doing. Her dad lived out his musical dream. How can anyone tell her that a child of a dreamer it is not possible?

Strict playing is something she feels takes away from the art of music. She has a sultry raspy voice that is just intoxicating to listen too.  She has always tried to stray away from the structure. “Structured music scene is difficult when you enter a venue that is small or empty,” Siders feels. She goes on to discuss that when any musician is starting out they do to the various audience and by the time you have made the big house you have played to every kind of audience there is out there.  She wants to go with the flow. She never starts with a set list again there is no structure.

Jared Manker, “Mank” of Mank and Sass, is classically trained in music. He has the strict background insight into music. He assists her with the theory and structure of the songs.  Mank has a strong structure in music and is learning to enjoy the improv with her personality. His schooling allows for Siders to see where she is with her music and how to find her personal style of music.

She met her wife in high school here in Champaign, even though she was living in California. Her family often visited family in Champaign. She met her at a high school party. She fell in love with Erin Siders right off the bat. It took a journey to get together.  Between college and military, they stayed connected.  Eventually, Siders moved from Indianapolis to Champaign where she reconnected with Erin on Valentines Day 2012. They married in 2015. Siders does not understand the confusion over love.

She knows that even walking down the street she is not the pretty straight girl. Her mother was concerned with her moving to the midwest. Having grown up in California the comfortably being gay was not found in Indianapolis. She says, “There were many times I felt like the only gay person walking in the state.” Her philosophy is if she is the only gay person someone meets she wants that will be a great encounter. Be good to people.”

Siders influences to keep going is that it makes her heart happy. The work she did before this time there was no connection. This just makes her happy. Her father is so happy with what he does was a great lesson she learned. She grew up around good timeless music. Her musical inspirations include:

  • Janice Joplin
    • She said, “you got to give it to a woman who looks like she is going to pass out every time she is singing on stage.”
  • Ella Fitzgerald
    • “A truly amazing talent,” she says.
  • David Bowie
    • “You got to love Bowie. You got to love someone who can be himself,” Siders states.
  • Tina Turner
    • She said, “She is strong and a great achiever.”

Mornings are her favorite time of the day. She is a very early riser and makes her bed every day. It is a challenge at this time her wife works the graveyard shift, but she makes the bed when Erin gets up in the afternoon. It is a closing to the night and a beginning to the day. Makes the room a lot better. She enjoys a morning of songwriting and coffee.  She drinks at least a cup of coffee every day. She really loves coffee, mornings, and writing. Recently wrote More Than Caffeine.

As we finish our coffees she discusses her family and wife. How much they bring to her life. She has embraced the struggles she faced, stayed true to herself and continues to believe and dream.

She is releasing an album June 16, 2018 album on iTunes or message them on Facebook for T-shirts and a CD.

Persistance to Look Forward ~ Jackson Thomas Carey

Persistance to Look Forward ~ Jackson Thomas Carey

Jackson Thomas Carey, the producer at The Motive Productions, brings beats to the world of music. Carey began musical training as a young child and quickly found recreating the musical sounds rewarding. His motivation to continue forward with focus and perseverance.

Jackson Thomas Carey The Motive Productions
The Motive Productions

His musical training directed him to the world of recreating musical instruments a true talent. Carey took his raw talent to these creations. His motivation lead him to work in studios as an intern. He was able to learn and grow his raw talent. This training and talent lead to recreating instrumentals for hip hop. He starts with the beat and layers with synthesizers and drums.

Carey believes that perseverance is the key to success with everything. Knowledge of a better life and a stronger future makes this possible. Knowing a real low point in life makes perseverance steadfastness in doing something despite delaying success.

He knows real struggles and low points in life. Five years ago he began a spiral down with the use of opioid pain pills prescriptions from other people’s scripts. His drug use turned from use of other’s prescriptions to heroin. This turn moved him to a time of selfishness and a life of blinders, not seeing the big picture. He looked only for his next fix and that was the focus of his life. Took his drug abuse to overdosing several times.

Soon Carey released that he was being selfish with his drug use.  The journey to take back his life he realized that he was really being a baby about life. That his expectation in life was other’s were to help and do for him. He took the time to conclude he wanted to be a man.

Support came from his family. They took the time to love him but remained strict with their expectations and rules. This turn allowed for Carey to turn the switch back on. He started to see the way and the light.

Jackson Thomas Carey The Motive Production Best Way to Health
Jackson Thomas Carey

This time he really is excited about the person he is. This discovery came through self-discovery. Many close to him are seeing his true self-return again.  The most important message for him is that he needed to do this for himself. “Drug use is very focused on the moment, the now, Carey says. He learned that he lost a huge chunk of time.”

“Time is rare,” Carey states, “As a child time has no meaning. As an adult time is precious and how much it takes each day to get everything done.” His favorite hip-hop artists include A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde. His interest and talent returned with the new direction and focus in his life. He is again creating beats for musicians. This business started with interest from hip-hop artists hearing his beats and purchasing them.

Carey starts each day with plenty of water and a to-do list. His list consists of ten items to focus on. His works to complete each item each day. He will allow one item to move forward if necessary, but this allows him the motivation to stay focused and persevere.

Sean Callery joins us on the red carpet at the Emmy® Creative Arts Awards. He composed himself to two Emmy® nominations for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music and Outstanding Music Composition For A Series Original Dramatic Score. This is his fifteenth and sixteenth Emmy® nomination.

Callery started his musical playing the piano. As he got older his mother began taking him to movies. This is when he realized how powerful music was to the storyline. He said, “Take Jaws, for example, that two bar section eludes fear even by mentioning the name Jaws. The two bars immediately play through your mind. Music is the oldest language and universal. It provides communication of sound. Music is power and energy, almost intoxicating.”

Composing Minority Report after John Williams’ composition for the film was a little intimidating. They wanted a new score and story with the new version. The focus was on new energy for the music. It was an honor to work with such a great team on series.

Working with Marvel’s Jessica Jones was a wonderful opportunity. Marvel Comics is something Callery grew up with as a child. There were so many characters that interact and such richness in each story. Marvel brings a great place for everyone to feel inclusive.

Sean Callery receives his 4th Emmy® for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music for Marvel’s Jessica Jones.

Hollywood’s Party ~ Golden Globes

Hollywood’s Party ~ Golden Globes

The Golden Globes starts award season each year with exceptional fashion, food, and entertainment. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors the best in film and television at the 74th annual ceremony. This year’s red carpet, dinner, award show, and after parties did not disappoint.

Many gracing the red carpet turn to a stylist to put the entire look together. “The stylist’s job is to bring all looks together that the team has envisioned for the celebrity.” (Gabriel Langenbrunner).  Gabriel styles Egith van Dinther, rising Dutch model, for the Golden Globes red carpet look. The soft romantic style is a beautiful look for the red carpet.

Styling includes:

  • Dress: Pia Gladys Perey
  • Rings: Rosalina Lydster
  • Earrings: Alyce Ross
  • Bracelet: Caterina Jewelry
  • Clutch: DeBlossom
  • Shoes: Louboutin

Red carpet fashion was a variety of gowns, pantsuits, tuxedos, and designers. This year was the year of the beard for men. The gowns were traditional, classic, and the first couture gown. The fashion was colorful with yellow being a strong presence for the evening.

The night held some great classics, new modern twists, and setting the tone for award season. The evening was fabulous from the red carpet to after parties.

Robert Duncan ~ Improvising

Robert Duncan ~ Improvising

Robert Duncan Composition Emmy 4Chion Lifestyle
Robert Duncan and wife Katie Emmy Creative Arts Red Carpet

Robert Duncan joins us on the red carpet at The Emmys® Creative Arts Awards. He is the composer for The Whispers main title. This is his fourth Emmys® nomination.

Duncan became interested in television themes while taking piano lessons at a young age. He would try to figure out the themes during his practice time. He enjoyed learning music by ear. His ear training leads to figuring out what the chords were for the theme songs of his favorite shows.

His teacher would ask, “Duncan did you practice your lessons?” He would respond, “no, but you can teach me to improvise.” Many of his piano lessons included improvising.

Improvising provides insight into working in the studio when composing music for television shows for Duncan. “The picture is the roadmap,” he says. The process is watching a scene or two from the show. He said, “I work through the score by sorting through what is good and throwing away the rest. I never know what it is going to sound like when starting the music composition. There is a lot of editing.”

Music, he goes on, to explain is the psychological connection for visual media. He looks for that common denominator when creating music for mass audiences. Music can make people feel certain emotions. Musical acupuncture notes and tones help with scoring music for specific scenes, themes, and moments.

He has composed for many series: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Vanished, and Castle. He is honored for the nomination in this category. It goes back to his childhood and the days of piano practicing and lessons.

Duncan just welcomed a baby 14 days ago. This is his sixth child. He success each day is sleep and a bit of panic to get going for the day. He loves being locked in his studio with Facebook off.

Duncan looks dapper in a Tom Ford tuxedo.

The Whispers nomination is 1 Emmys® for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.

My Name Is ~ Diane Warren

My Name Is ~ Diane Warren

Emmy's Creative Arts 2016 Red Carpet by 4Chion Marketing
Diane Warren Emmy’s Creative Arts Red Carpet

Lady Gaga is preparing for the biggest show in sports, the Super Bowl Halftime Show. The practices and song list not released to the press at this time. This classically trained musician will present a top performance. The stakes for any performance are high. There is nothing comparing to Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s 2016 Oscars performance ‘Til It Happens to You.

This song was the theme song,  The Hunting Ground, a film about multiple students who allegedly sexually assaulted at college campuses, and there claims ignored or required to navigate a complex academic bureaucracy addressing their claims. This collaboration nominated for an 88th Oscars MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG) and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. We meet Diane Warren, at the Creative Arts Emmys®.

Emmys® Creative Arts 4Chion Lifestyle
Emmys® Creative Arts

Diane Warren’s award-winning music writing started early in life. One of her first songs was Solitaire and Hot Night, for Ghostbusters. She has worked for decades creating award-winning music.

She states, “this song became something more than ever expected. Listening to the stories of these victims compelled me to write the song. I want this song to be the inspiration to all going through a difficult time.”  We talked about the moment at the Oscars® when the victims filled the stage. The emotion that filled the room as they stood to share their message of being a victim written on their arms. She said, “It was a moment to listen and feel.”

Backstage Emmys® Creative Arts Awards Diane Warren

Diane Warren is the recipient of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, at The Emmys®.  She said, “I am a bit overwhelmed at this moment.” This song has carried this message to many sexual assault victims and many more.

“‘Til it happens to you, you won’t know
It won’t be real (how could you know?)
No it won’t be real (how could you know?)
Won’t know how it feels.” (‘Til It Happens To You)

The statistics, “Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. And every 8 minutes, that victim is a child. Meanwhile, only 6 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison.” (RANN).

“If nothing changes, more than 100,000 college students will be sexually assaulted in the upcoming school year.” (Kilpatrick, Resnick, Ruggiero, Conoscenti, McCauley (2007) The Hunting Ground)
